Introduction and Learning Objectives
The purpose of this audio mix is to explain what Short Selling on the NY Stock Exchange is and why traders do it. The intended audience is anybody who knows nothing about short selling stock. Normally people buy stock low and hope it increases in value. Short selling stock is the exact opposite.
Licensing
I own a CD of Frank Sinatra’s greatest hits which includes the song “New York, New York.” This is from my own music library.
I researched and found an adequate definition for short selling stock from the website investopedia.com. I modified the words so it would match the length I chose to speak, then I recorded the audio of my voice using my laptop.
Techniques
I faded in the Frank Sinatra song to begin the audio clip. I then layered in my voice recording to start a few seconds in. I created a looping sound when I mentioned the value “20 dollars” by overlaying a copied clip of it on top of the original. I did the same thing at the end when I repeat the words “you can become rich!” I also echoed the words “million dollars.” Finally, I slowed down Frank Sinatra’s voice at the end of the song so that it’ll sound warped, suggesting that getting rich off this scheme could be morally warped.
Reflection
Recently, the retail video game store named Gamestop stumbled into headline news when nonprofessional traders rallied together to purchase large quantities of stock which drove the price higher than what it’s worth. This caused Professional traders on Wall Street who short sold GameStop stock to lose lots of money. This inspired me to base my digital audio learning experience on short selling stock
I used Adobe Audition. I found it a little difficult to get started. I had to watch a few videos for basic things like cutting sections of audio out. In the past, I’ve been able to figure that out intuitively using less sophisticated software. However, moving along, I expect to appreciate Audition more and more as I increase my skill level.
